Matlacha consists of colorful homes, bars, art gallery’s, a post office, restaurant’s, a pet grooming service, gift shops, a marina, bait shops, a convenience store, a gym and lodging places — all clustered together. Some buildings are big, others are cottages, and a few are trailers. Once a month, during the winter months, Matlacha has “Friday Night Out” where all the art galleries are open, offering refreshments and art shows. Shrimp boats, other commercial vessels, yachts, rowboats, canoes and kayaks and flats skiffs dot the waterways.
